The statistics of being that guy

Vintage poster-style illustration of a lone skier riding a chairlift above a cream-colored slope, with a small boombox strapped to his backpack, while three strangers on the same chair lean away from him beneath a geometric forest-green ridge and an ochre sun

There's a guy on your chairlift right now. He's got a speaker in his backpack, turned up as loud as it goes, and everyone around him is hearing his music whether they asked to or not.

I have never been that guy. Not once. I think the whole thing is ridiculous, and I think people should stop. Here's why.

First, the music taste question. What are the chances that a group of a hundred people, even all in the same age group, are going to like the same music? Slim to none. Everyone's taste is different. Even your own friends don't listen to the same stuff you do. A hundred strangers on a mountain? Come on.

Second, the bigger question: who wants to hear music while they ski? Sure, maybe a couple people think it's cool. But most people listening to you are thinking one thing: who is this asshole. You didn't come to the mountain to be in somebody's music video. You came to ski. The mountains are quiet. That's the whole point.

So do everybody a favor and use headphones. If you want to hear music, put it in your own ears. Nobody else signed up for it.

Meanwhile, I'll tell you what I want when I'm playing a game on my phone. I don't want a soundtrack. I usually listen to podcasts about AI or something, and when I want a game, I want a game that doesn't fight my podcast for the same ten minutes. That's one of the reasons I made Max Vert, the world's only skiing card game. No music. No jingle. Eight rounds, a hand full of runs, and one decision: bank the vert, or send it.

See you out there. I'll be the one with the headphones on.
