Vert is the score, risk is the game
Skiers already keep score. We talk about how many runs we got, how high we climbed, and how much vertical we put behind us before the lifts closed.
Max Vert makes vertical feet the score. That part is easy to understand. The interesting question is how you earn them.
You start by choosing a run you can handle. Your skis, gear, skills, and level give you Control. The run has a Difficulty. If you meet it, the line is yours.
Then comes the decision. You can ski safe and bank the listed vert. Or you can send it. A style roll can turn a run into a stomp worth double, but it can also leave you with nothing. The more you commit, the more exciting the roll becomes.
That is what makes a familiar ski day feel different every round. A safe blue may be exactly what you need. A difficult line may be worth the gamble. A condition may change the choice. Your friends may convince you to push—or remind you that there is always another run tomorrow.
Vert tells you who is ahead. Risk is what makes getting there fun.
